FAQ's
What is the difference between a catalytic fireplace and a non-catalytic fireplace?

Both Country Flame catalytic and non-catalytic wood-burning fireplaces have been certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to be clean burning and are great heating appliances. Different technologies are used to achieve these results. Catalytic fireplaces use a catalyst to burn the gases in smoke that would otherwise form creosote in your chimney and pollute the air. Catalytic wood fireplaces are generally larger in size than non-catalytic wood fireplaces, and will usually have longer burn times. The Country Flame catalytic wood fireplaces will heat larger areas using a double wall heat exchanger system built within the fireplace to distribute heat throughout the home.

Non-catalytic wood fireplaces use a technology similar to a kiln. By using firebrick to hold an intense amount of heat within the firebox itself, and injecting secondary air in the top of the firebox, the Country Flame Ovation line of non-catalytic wood fireplaces are very clean burning and efficient. Non-catalytic wood fireplaces are generally smaller in size than catalytic models and can be used for zone heating purposes but are also capable of heating large areas. Country Flame's Ovation non-catalytic wood fireplaces have a 5-sided convection chamber to distribute heat throughout the home. Most non-catalytic wood fireplaces tend to be more draft sensitive than catalytic wood fireplaces but are easier to operate.

Do your wood fireplaces have ash pans?

Ovation freestanding models OV-2100, OV-2600, and OV-3000 in our non-catalyst line have a convenient, large ash drawer built into each fireplace.

What does the catalyst do in the Country Flame catalytic wood-burning fireplace?

The catalyst completes combustion or the burning of the smoke from a wood fueled fire. Ordinarily the temperature required to complete combustion is too high to accomplish in a wood fireplace. However, the catalytic combustor is coated with chemicals that cause the smoke to ignite at a lower temperature, causing the Country Flame fireplace to burn more efficiently and produce more heat from each log. In other words, you are not only retrieving heat from the burning logs, but also from the burning of the smoke that in times past only produced creosote in the chimney. Independent research has shown that up to 50% more heat is generated from each piece of wood — a real savings to the owner. For more information on the do's and don'ts of catalytic combustors go to: www.appliedceramics.com/FAQ.html.

What is the warranty of the catalyst and how long does it usually last?

The warranty on the catalytic combustor is 6 years (full replacement for 3 years with second 3 years prorated). Because of the design of the Country Flame catalytic wood fireplaces, the catalyst will usually last approximately 10 years as long as the appliance is not abused or wrong fuels used. For additional information go to the web site: www.appliedceramics.com/FAQ.html.

Do you have any fireplace inserts approved for use in an existing zero-clearance fireplace?

Yes. In our catalytic line of wood fireplaces, the model O2 is approved for use in zero-clearance fireplaces. It is specifically designed to fit into a very short fireplace at only 17 ½" in height. And, the Ovation Bay Flame insert at 20" in height is also approved for use in zero-clearance fireplaces.

Can I use my Country Flame wood fireplace or fireplace insert in case of a power outage?

Yes. Our complete line of wood-burning fireplaces and fireplace inserts are designed for use in cases of power outage… when you need them most.

My firebricks are cracked in my Country Flame fireplace. Is that a problem?

Catalytic Wood fireplaces: The brick panels or refractory liners, as they are called, are fine to use, even if they become cracked. The Country Flame fireplaces are UL approved even without the use of the refractory panels. Cracks are not a problem; however, should the brick panels begin to crumble, we recommend that you replace them. Your local Country Flame dealer can sell you these replacement items. Non-Catalytic Wood fireplaces: The firebrick in the Country Flame Ovation line of non-catalytic wood fireplaces should be replaced should they become cracked. Care should be taken when putting wood into the Ovation fireplaces not to "throw" the wood into the fireplace in such a way that it will crack the firebrick on the back wall of the fireplace. Should you need to replace your firebrick, your local Country Flame dealer can sell you replacements.

Where do I find the model number on the Country Flame Wood fireplaces?

Each wood fireplace / fireplace insert has a rating plate on the back of the fireplace. You will find both the model number and serial number on this plate.

Do you have any wood fireplaces approved for mobile home use?

Yes. Our Ovation line of wood fireplaces are approved for mobile home use with back-wall clearances of 5" (using double-wall black fireplace pipe), outside combustion air, and 6" flue.

NOTE: Outside air connection is required on all mobile home installations. We do not make any fireplace inserts to go into existing fireplaces that are approved for mobile home use.

Can I convert my Country Flame wood fireplace to a gas fireplace?

No. Country Flame wood fireplaces are designed and tested to burn only wood. Installation of gas logs or a gas burner in a wood fireplace is dangerous and will void your Country Flame warranty.
